What tattoo shall I choose?
In this article:
Over the years, this is the single question we have been asked more than any other. We wanted to share our thoughts here, especially for those friends out there who are still on the fence or feeling unsure about what design to choose. Our answer might surprise you coming from a design studio, because it is simply: "none."
1. The ultimate advice: When to choose "none"
Of course, stated like that, it sounds like a provocation! So let us explain what we really mean: never choose a design you are not completely sure of.
To understand why, we have to look at what ink really represents. What is a tattoo to you?
- A) Just a beautiful piece of art?
- B) A visual symbol holding personal power?
- C) A form of medicine for the soul?
2. What is a tattoo? More than a beautiful design
A tattoo absolutely needs to be an aesthetic, well-crafted design. After all, we are going to look at it every single day of our lives. But that daily interaction is exactly what gives it a unique influence over us. A tattoo truly does hold power.
It can subtly reshape how we perceive ourselves and even how other people perceive us. Certain custom designs can help us heal, find closure, or navigate difficult chapters. They can offer a quiet source of inner strength or serve as a daily reminder that life is happening right now, in this exact moment, and should be lived with the same joy and wonder that children know so well. In that sense, a tattoo really can act as medicine for the spirit.
3. Why life itself is like a permanent canvas
We have been creating custom tribal artwork for many years. Time and again, clients return to tell us how their symbols have impacted their daily lives, making one profound truth clearer to us every day:
"Life itself is very much like a tattoo. We choose the blueprint, deciding what to carry forward and what to leave out. And just like a tattoo, our time and space are limited. The more room we yield to old sorrows, the less space we have left to collect beautiful moments."
If we treat both our ink and our lives with intention and care, when we look back down the road, we will still be absolutely in love with the choices we made. Trends fade, and you might eventually grow accustomed to a beautiful shape, but if a design carries a genuine, deep-rooted meaning, you will never tire of it.
4. Thinking about names and letters? Read this first
We also want to share a quick piece of honest advice regarding names, initials, and interlaced letters. This does not come from a place of cynicism, but simply from years of observing real-world stories: if the initials do not belong to your children, your parents, or your closest family roots, think twice before getting them permanently inked.
Partners, fiancés, spouses... no matter how beautiful or powerful a love story is right now (and we always hope it lasts a lifetime!), life has an unpredictable way of unfolding. What happens down the road if your paths diverge? Even if that person remains an unforgettable chapter of your history, what will a future partner think when they look at your skin? Will they view that permanent name with the same romantic perspective as you do?
A beautiful alternative for your big day: While we generally discourage engraving a partner's initials into your skin, these custom monograms and heartigrams are absolutely flawless for temporary milestones. They make the perfect, romantic complement for wedding invitations, stationary, or ceremony decor. In those spaces, they capture a beautiful snapshot of a shared journey and truly "live" in that exact, magical moment—without the lifetime commitment.
If you are committed to permanent ink, choosing an evocative, symbolic design that holds a shared, metaphorical meaning is often a much more timeless choice. It allows you to carry that profound bond forever without putting names or letters directly on display, keeping your story private, poetic, and entirely elegant. After all, a tattoo is forever.
